Facepalm

Sometimes people are dumb. The sad thing is that these answers aren't a lot different from those given by people in my grade...35 years ago. We are now adults, and I'm sure they haven't figured any more out since then. So it's not JUST kids that are dumb.

Some outtakes:
  • We fought the Cold War to "finish war."
  • There are 400 amendments to the Constitution. Nope, there are 24 apparently. Or 20.
  • Our nation's capital is Austin.
  • If the President and Vice President both die, the First Lady gets to be President.
Q: Who were we fighting in the Revolutionary War
A: Union v. Confederate
A: Ourselves (I guess this is true in the sense that they were British citizens fighting for independence from Britain)
A: Europe

Q: What is the name of the Vice President of the United States now?
A: Klenton

Q: What did the Emancipation Proclamation do?
A: Free Africans.
A: Emancipate us from England
However, if you are interested in sparking a conversation with someone--especially teens--don't talk directly to them. [also found at Teenagers are Ridiculous]

Things I've learned* recently

*or been reminded of
  • Catholics do religious ceremony extremely well.
  • Mentioning a bar mitzvah following said Catholic ceremony certainly got the attention of a little ol' lady bigot...and she didn't even know my last name "is Jewish" or that I was kidding about the bar mitzvah.
  • God is weird. Also extremely obvious when He wants me to be learning something: the lesson at Sunday School and the homily for mass were essentially the same in spite of being at two churches 60 miles apart and in different denominations.
  • Bucket list item: receiving the Body and Blood at a Catholic church. Just because they say I can't.
  • If you take (or even took, years ago) Risperdal, you can't join the Marines.
  • OTOH, why was an 11-year-old taking Risperdal in the first place?
  • There is a big difference between personality quirks and mental illness. Whether they're as crazy as the day is long or not, some people are just bossy, pretentious boors.
  • Some things never change.
  • I stand by my statement of about ten years ago that someone who is always finding fault in others in the meanest possible way definitely has some self-esteem issues.
  • Sitting on wooden chairs for 4 hours over the course of about 7 hours total + still-bruised tailbone = very sore butt for the next two (at least) days.
  • Some people should never have children, at least not the children they have.
  • Staring at a computer screen while clicking back and forth between 2-3 different programs can cause motion sickness. Especially when one's bifocals need adjusting.
  • I need to have goals. For my annual evaluation. I absolutely loathe goal-setting. My goal every day is to get stuff done, feel good about the product and amount of stuff I got done, and go home to read/play/sleep. I don't think that's what the boss wants to hear.
  • It rains a lot in the spring around here. I probably shouldn't have gotten out the summer pajamas yet. Or taken the blanket off the bed.
  • A confluence of realizations has caused me to understand that I'm late-middle-aged: children whose births I remember clearly reaching adulthood (and in some cases having kids of their own), the fact that I've lived in this area for coming up on 20 years this June, and Sparky being old enough now to drink, and people around me suddenly looking OLD....and a growing lack of tolerating nonsense.
  • Cancer sucks. No. Really: it sucks. We're watching a friend die this month after being in remission just 6 months ago. She has, now, maybe three weeks (I'm figuring that she was told a month, give or take, during Holy Week). God, give her strength. Lord, give us all strength.
  • Keeping plastic bugs in your desk drawer means that a certain contingent of the population will always stop by to visit when their parents bring them in.
  • I know awesome people. Some of them are ridiculous and silly, but they are good and kind and loving and forgiving.
  • Recovery is an interesting, joyful, painful, irritating, and glorious process.
Did I mention my butt hurts? I think it's time for Tylenol and bed.

Blog Challenge

I'm seriously sucking at this blog-every-day thing. Oh well. Here are the last three days' worth:

Friday was supposed to cover [My] Earliest Memory. The one I usually answer with is that I remember sitting on the couch in the living room writing in my mom's address book. Those scribbles, and the address book itself, were still around when I graduated from high school 15 years later. However, I do have some vague memories of the previous suite of living room furniture (prior to the couch on which I was sitting with the address book). I actually remember the earlier stuff mainly because of a nightmare I had back then that involved either monsters hiding behind it or the furniture itself turning into monsters. Isn't it weird that I can remember a nightmare from 45+ years ago?!

Yesterday's topic--Your Favorite Tumblrs--is easy. I don't actually use Tumblr for anything unless someone directs me to one. I don't see the point of them, actually, but then I've never been much of a photo/picture blogger. I do have a lot of favorite blogs. Most are over in the right column. Most of the rest, the memes, are in the sidebar on my memes blog.

And today is about [My] Views on Mainstream Music. Oy. This is a WIIIIIIIIDE-open question, isn't it? I have come to the conclusion that while I admire rap/hip-hop and don't hate it as a genre, I really don't get it. It doesn't, usually, speak to me. Doesn't mean I think rappers are awful people, and I'll sit through the good stuff, and I actually do like some of it...but most of it I can't relate to at all. Mainstream pop I don't mind--it hasn't changed much over the years; now we have autotune and EDM, 10-15 years ago it was boy bands and harmonizing, when I was a kid it was squeaky-clean bouncy bubblegum. I don't mind it, but there's a limit to what I can ingest. I have gone off heavy rock, and feel the same way about it as I do about pop: a little goes a long way. I'd link to my Spotify account so you can see what I listen to, but it's got my real name on it, so I'll just list the first dozen randomized songs on my Starred list (which currently has 314 songs on it):
  • Pumped Up Kicks (Foster the People)
  • When You're Gone (Avril Lavigne)
  • Ballroom Blitz (Sweet)
  • Kiss Me Deadly (Lita Ford)
  • Meet Me in the Back (Melissa Etheridge)
  • Shooby (Nicole Mullen)
  • Rockferry (Duffy)
  • Good Life (OneRepublic)
  • Cry Baby (Janis Joplin)
  • Mouth Wedding (Transglobal Underground)
  • 99 Luftballons (Nena)
  • Authority Song (John Mellencamp)

Blog Challenge

Sigh...it's another twofer day.

Yesterday was Write 30 Interesting Facts About Yourself. "Interesting" is always the stopping point here; I'll do my best to be interesting.
  1. I'm an empty-nester and I'm not 50 yet.
  2. I was a pleaser as a kid. I was a pleaser as a young adult. I still am, but I try to remember that sometimes I need to just say "fuck it."
  3. I swear too much.
  4. I’m a lifelong Presbyterian, following in my mother’s footsteps. I really do believe in the way the Presbys run things, and I absolutely believe in the whole God/Jesus/Bible stuff because it makes sense for me.
  5. I spent three weeks during a January in mid-80s in the (then) Soviet Union. I also spent a week that same January in China.
  6. I have 12 blogs, or blog-type sites.
  7. When I was a teenager I always said that I’d never date a football player. Yeah. So I married one instead.
  8. I was a DJ at my college radio station all four years I was there. I loved it.
  9. I weigh 40 pounds more now than I did a week before Sparky was born. That means that 22 years ago I weighed more than 75 pounds less than I do now.
  10. I'm allergic to lots of things: grasses, animals, pollen, and some foods.
  11. I read a lot about early church history, exegesis, and language/translation. That's offset by all the murder mysteries and true crime I read.
  12. My grandparents were born between 1875 and 1895.
  13. My parents got married in 1941, months before Pearl Harbor. Their ages at marriage total up to just about 41.
  14. I have relatives currently living in 5 states and 2 foreign countries.
  15. My new boss's name sounds like the acronym for our library's catalog. It's rather confusing.
  16. My former boss shares her first name with three of my current coworkers. Fortunately, only one of them worked there at the same time as Former Boss.
  17. I have bitten my nails and cuticles for over 40 years. I don't think there's any hope of me quitting. But right now only two of the nails on my left hand are very short; the other 8 nails are long (for me).
  18. My massage therapist is a steampunk-con costumed attender.
  19. I've subscribed to Ms. Magazine for almost 30 years, though there were a few years there that I bailed because it started down a very weird path. It was the Good Housekeeping-type gardening article that I remember as the shark-jumping-article for me.
  20. I've subscribed to Entertainment Weekly for almost 20 years. I have no idea why I love it, but I do. Smart cotton candy?
  21. I'm addicted to New Tricks. I'm just finishing Season Seven. There are a lot of really stupid plotlines and the sound quality is rough, but the characters crack me up.
  22. One of the hardest things about parenting for me is letting go of expectations. I'm not pleased with Sparky or myself right now. I need to get over the former, and stop berating myself.
  23. I really do like kids. Little ones, middle ones and older ones (though not necessarily the hormones-out-of-control age, especially in groups).
  24. I also like to travel. I'm currently in the process of trying to nail down possibilities for our anniversary (next month) and Beast's and my 50th birthdays (later in the year). So many choices!!
  25. I do my own pedicures. It keeps me limber.
  26. My shoulders hurt almost all the time anymore. It's amazing the level of pain one can get used to.
  27. I have at least one friend who believes in Bigfoot's existence. And he's not ignorant, or uneducated. I don't get it, but there you go. There is the off-chance he's yanking everyone's chain, though.
  28. One of my favorite ways to relax is a good book read in the bathtub.
  29. I watch network or local nightly news less than ten times a year, usually when visiting family. I hate it.
  30. I'm really bad at these kinds of lists. This one took me almost two hours to create.
Fortunately, today is easier: the topic is Your Zodiac Sign, and If You Think It Fits Your Personality. I'm a Scorpio and, using this site, it seems relatively accurate, as these things go.

        Time passages

        • Yesterday was Homecoming at Beast's & my (and Sparky's) college. Sparky was sick, but the weather was gorgeous.
        • Our team lost. Booo...
        • Thirty years ago this fall I was more homesick than ever before (or since) and also exhilarated by college life.
        • It was fun to go back, weird to sit in a dorm and listen to boys/men shout swear words in the halls (not to mention the 100 dB rap music), and good to see the campus looking great.
        • The campus library hasn't changed except for some of the books moving around. And there are more computers, of course.
        • We had to come home last night because I work today. And teach Sunday School, too.
        • Some of the people I work with SUCK BALLS!
        • Most of the people I work with are simply awesome, even inspirational.
        • The Head of HR for the City--and thus us--informed us that we full-timers should all be working 45+ hour weeks until a new director and children's librarian are hired. Excuse the FUCK outta me but, with one exception (see above) we already DO work over our hours on a regular basis, beeyotch.
        • Last week is over. Thank God.
        • I'm afraid to get a flu shot because so many people around me have been sick in the past week; what if the shot along with their germs makes me sick!?
        • Pinto, the youngest guinea pig, tried to commit seppuku Friday when I cleaned their cage: he leapt out of my arms onto the top of the cage and nearly fell off the back. Maybe we shoulda named him Spaz....
        • I met someone for the first time last Sunday who was sure I worked in the same community as him (he's a firefighter several towns to our east). Nope. Really. NOPE!
        • Beast and I got to new cell phones on Monday. They are officially smarter than us. lol
        • I'm glad the professional refs are back. A week too late for the Packers, but...oh well, right?
        • Having badgered Beast into making a doctor's appointment to get his cough and his "numbers" checked out, I think I need to get in to see MY doctor as well about some weird new not-so-fun things my body is doing.
        • Time to get going: Sunday School, breakfast with Beast, work (post-upgrade, I hope everything works!), then home for the Packer game (and pizza?)

        Nothing since mid-month??

So much for regular updates...again. I don't really have a ton to say, either. Rough week this week as far as allergies go. My brain is melting/melted. So I'll just post this list of words saved in my cell-phone's dictionary.  It's about 20% of what's actually there, but you'll get the gist of most of my conversations over the past year. Oh, and I delete the typos on a very regular basis. :-p

        College

Sparky had to call the registrar at his college this morning to find out how to access his grades. Yes, he's been there a full school year and never knew how to find them. So now we know the bad news. Essentially, MANY more rounded letters than straight-line letters.

And the other news? I filled out the FAFSA wrong, so I redid it using the correct figures from our income tax forms. Our taxes were filed at a particularly bad time in Beast's back-pain history, so he barely remembers doing them at all. And he had forgotten he got an extension for his dad's taxes, so remembering that put him in a funk.

In other news, I have entered nearly 1100 books into Goodreads in the past week. I've made it up to 1995 working forward and back to 2010 working backwards. Backwards is easier: I just copy from my reading blog. The older lists require me to retype stuff, and in several cases, I've found that I originally wrote down incorrect information (wrote author, wrong title, and/or typos of same). On the other hand, my inner geek is having a blast.

        Saturday=Work Day

[If you follow my meme blog, this will all look familiar to you: I posted it there first today.]

We have family coming to stay with us a couple of nights this week, so the push is on to get the house tidied up. Since one of those people is under 5, it means some major renegotiation of space so everyone has a comfortable place to sleep. One of the things I've put off (for several years) is getting the upstairs storage area cleaned out of all the old clothes. I scheduled a pickup from Purple Heart for this Tuesday, so this morning I sealed the Already Packed Boxes and loaded the Rest of the Stuff into garbage bags--their preferred containers apparently nowadays. They all need to be brought downstairs and left on the front porch, but after a little extra reorganization that storage space looks the best it has in several years. Plus, I found my parents' slides from when I marched in the Tournament of Roses parade; Beast is going to convert them so I can post them on our high school reunion and high school band Facebook pages.

Then I came downstairs with my lingerie and hand-wash-only clothing and started that load.

Next up: moving shit around in the pantry. That room has become an absolute nightmare: literally no place to stand but in the space the door opens. Since it's actually meant to be a laundry room, that means there is a LOT of junk piled higgledy-piggledy on the floor. But no more! The cases of pop are now lined up out of the way, the giant Bag of Plastic Bags is on the back steps to go for recycling when I hit the grocery store tonight, the ancient golf clubs that kept falling down are now back in a corner where they are less likely to get knocked down, the step stool, distilled water, First Floor Laundry Basket, and cleaning supplies are pushed back and stacked so there's room to maneuver, and all the paper bags are together inside the biggest. I also threw out some liquor bottles that were empty, tossed some very old food gifts, rearranged our drinking water containers, 409'd the liquor shelf to get rid of the sticky spots, and swept guinea pig fluff out of the corners (the downside of having them living near the pantry is that their stuff goes in there: yuck. Also, I took the bag of scarves, gloves and assorted other paraphernalia from my mother-in-law's front closet--she died 4 years ago--and added it to the pile for Purple Heart.

Once that was done, I moved the laundry around the next cycle and came back upstairs where I emptied the dishwasher, reloaded it with what can be cleaned in there setting aside a couple of things that didn't get completely degunked in the last load, and ran water to wash pots and pans. Beast spent 10 minutes levering out the Spiced Tea that had solidified in a mason jar in the pantry over the past 4-5 years since my sister gave it to me, and I washed up all the stuff on the counter.

All accomplished between 10:30 and 12:30 when my knees suddenly went weak and I started to feel sick--oh, yeah, maybe I should eat something besides bread today! Somewhere in the midst of all of this I had a Very Necessary Conversation with Katherine, my niece, who is hosting another contingent of family starting tonight. She's wanted to get all their activities absolutely nailed to the wall before they arrive--that's what my family tends to do--and has been freaking out about this all spring, culminating this week. She seems fine now. I dunno, relaxation is not her thing at all. That was actually the worst part of the morning, to be honest.

The stuff in the dryer hadn't completely dried when I checked, so that's still hanging fire.

        What's left?
        1. Guinea pig cage cleaning. Maybe tomorrow. Then I don't have to do it again till next Sunday after Wayne and Elizabeth (and Justin) leave.
        2. Grocery shopping for us this week. Tonight. When Sparky can go with me; it's good to have him from a pragmatic point of view--he helps load while I scan at the self-check--and also it's good quality time to talk about stuff without him feeling like I'm grilling him. Which, of course, I am!
        3. Clean out the fridge. It's really not nice in there: lots of dried lettuce and so forth in the cooler bins, spilled baking soda, agéd food, and assorted stains. I really should also be checking the age of some of the food in the pantry, but I can do that later in the week.
        4. Find the sippy cups and lids. Technically, I know exactly where the lids are, but I can't remember where I put the cups.
Sparky is off doing his thing all day (7-7) at his "summer job" which is nothing we really want him involved in but are letting him try it out until he figures out why these things are called Pyramid Schemes (he's into it only $100 so far, which is a cheap lesson).

Beast is paying bills in the office. I may go in there and do some more work on my Goodreads shelves pretty soon. All in all I feel pretty good about today!

        Focus on the positive

        • Homemade mac-n-cheese for dinner tonight, a special request from Beast. I think I'm also going to bake some chicken so there's stuff to heat-and-eat later in the week. Anyway, he can't eat after midnight so I'm making extra stuff so that he can nosh later if he wants.
        • I can now wear sandals in public: my toenails (and feet, generally) are the least terrifying they've been since November, plus nail polish.
        • Laundry is almost half done.
        • I saw one of our former youth group kids this morning at church--she sat with us during worship, so we were sort of a 'family.' I miss that girl. And her family; they've moved about two and a half hours east of here.
        • If all goes as planned, Beast will be in recovery by this time tomorrow. He's been in agony the last few days. Friday and today have consisted of 2-3 hours of relative useful time and the rest mostly filled with pain and sleep.
        • Had a moment of panic last night thinking I'd have to take him to the ER again though for something very different this time. About 45 minutes after Beast went to bed I heard him thump and then get up out of bed. I dashed upstairs--I'm quite good at that now!--and found him bent in half sideways in the bathroom smacking the top-most side of his skull. "BUG! In my EAR! Get it OUT!!" I grabbed one of our ever-present flashlights, sat on the floor under his ear and shone it up into his ear...and a bug crawled out! {eeuuwwwww} I flicked it away with the tweezers I'd grabbed and eventually found it and flushed it. Not the most calming event right before bed, though he did get to sleep.
        • He's napping right now in the recliner, and about 10 minutes ago, he started flailing around his head, and I eventually realized he was dreaming/reliving last night's bug adventure.
        • Two people at church asked (individually) if I wanted them to come sit with me during the surgery tomorrow. It shocked me. I hadn't remembered this particular 'tradition' and had planned a cozy time reading a silly mystery. As Beast pointed out when we got home, it might be good to have someone there in case something goes awry--as it did when I had surgery 15 years ago.
Yes, I am living in lists. My brain is not functioning in any other manner right now. Very Twitter-y and flaky and not very deep. Oh well. Let's see if I can publish this without deleting anything, as I did yesterday. ...sigh Then it's time to boil some water for macaroni.

        ALA Midwinter Conference

I just returned from Dallas where this year's Midwinter conference was held. It's also where my brother lives, near his son and new daughter-in-law.

        Memory-bits:
        • Felt completely out of my depth at at least one point in every session I attended
        • Also felt completely welcomed at a couple of sessions where I actually was totally out of my depth
        • Librarians are wacky people, but really easy to identify...at hotels, restaurants, and airports...it was a sort of sport after the first 24 hours
        • Tex-Mex made by Greek-Americans is pretty good
        • Steak: also really good, if you're willing to pay for it
        • If you can, go to Texas de Brasile...unless you happen to be a vegetarian
        • I made the Dallas paper. This makes me laugh, but at least they didn't ferociously misquote me
        • I didn't see/meet anyone famous
        • I did see a ghost, and yes it was spooky as hell!
        • Got to see Ian Fairclough speak; I think I'm a very weird groupie
        • I sat by two French guys flying to Dallas and a middle-Eastern (I think, maybe) guy on the way home; I must be the Deals Well With Furr'ners person
        • Spent a LOT of time in the exhiibits
        • Picked up about 7 new carrier bags, along with the freebie they dole out at registration to everyone
        • Filled four (five?) bags full of books and other freebies; Beast is driving them home for me :-)
        • I got sicker most every day, and bailed on two OCLC breakfasts...
        • Having no voice makes talking to exhibitors all day difficult
        • I stayed in three hotels in five days. That was weird, but kind of fun
        • One of the hotels was quite a ways from the conference site, so Beast drove me back and forth; there was, however, a conference at that hotel, of gift shop owners....
        • ...gift shop owners' conferences seem to be full of snooty 20-somethings, but I snagged an abandoned carrier bag that is absolutely amazing...I will take a picture once Beast gets it home
        • The convention center...? Not in a great part of town, though they're working on it
        • Dallas drivers are insane
        • We landed a full half an hour early today. How often does that happen in January?!
I'm so tired I can't stop yawning. I think I'm going to skip Bible Study in the morning. Good night.
        Saturday, December 24, 2011
As posted elsewhere, my list of things to do today looked like this:
        • Make cookies
        • Wash bedspread
        • Wash lingerie
        • Finish wrapping presents
        • Christmas cards
        • Clean our bathroom (the one in our bedroom)
I could probably send a few last Christmas cards, but otherwise every single thing is done, and done well. This is unusual; I usually have an unrealistic view of my time and energy and create lists that are insane. I wasn't sure I'd actually finish all 6 things today, but I did. Yes, there are still a few gifts to wrap, but the recipient won't be around tomorrow, so I did procrastinate on those. And technically, Sparky made the cookies--throwing two kinds of prepackaged chips in a graham cracker crust, sprinkling with coconut and baking them for a half hour hardly constitutes "making cookies."

All that's left to do is get my hair sorted out (post-shower) and then the evening's activities can commence: Chinese food, Christmas-light viewing, and church. I should be in bed by 12:30ish. I just asked Sparky if he's leaving a note for Santa, and got a negative-sounding grunt in response.

        Things I should mention

        • Ellen and Spence are married. W00t. More on that later, I promise.
        • In spite of walking miles every day for at least 10 of the days we were gone, I gained weight. This does not come as a big surprise since I felt like I ate all day every day. Oh well.
        • Either my eyes have gotten very bad, or Blogger (in draft) shrinky-dinked their template page font. Everything is minuscule now.
        • I love my Nook. I may have mentioned that, but it's still true. It's not the same as reading a book-book, but that doesn't make it bad by any means. Some books won't work right in it, and sometimes you just need to hold a book, but the content of the book in a Nook is the same. Maybe better, since I can adjust the print size and leave myself notes without needing a pen to hand all the time.
        • Between the Nook and the Flip, we got lots of attention from technophiles overseas. And we took illegal video. Maybe I'll post some. :-)
        • Speaking of the Flip: WHAT THE HELL, Cisco?? Really? What.the.hell.
        • Karma bites hard. I did a somewhat-bad thing, and had the same thing happen to me in return. On the same trip.
        • Sparky ended up at the hospital, briefly (for a chest X-ray), while we were gone. FIL, however, had no problems whatsoever. Of course, we had prepared for the precise opposite, and didn't even leave Sparky's insurance info with either of them. Sparky's fine, just had a bad chest cold that caused him to have trouble breathing in gym class one day, and to miss one other day of school.
        • Speaking of my brilliant son who has 5 AP classes under his belt...he missed the deadline for signing up to take the AP tests for those classes. I have, so far, restrained myself from punching him in the head.
        • So yeah, the week before we left on vacation, I had a kidney stone problem. The follow-up visit to the doctor resulted in the news that I should probably try to drink more than 2 liters of water (liquids in general) per day. Two liters. That's a LOT of peeing!
        • No, I did not follow those directions in Europe. Give me a break.
        • I am tired of saying, "No, not that wedding." But I will probably watch some of that wedding.
        • "Gelato!" and "Room 4-4-6" will always remind me of Florence.
        • It was warmer in England the days we were there than it was in Italy. That, my friends, is weird. I about died of heat prostration at the wedding reception.
        • With the exception of tram, I think we road on every available sort of transportation available in the past week. Well, not city-bus-route buses or bicycles, either. Planes, trains, automobiles, taxis, coaches, subways...and then there is walking, too.
        • I will upload pictures tonight. Unless I end up needing to iron, in which case, I will upload pictures...this weekend.
        • Had my annual review yesterday. She likes me. I'm one of those who actually gets a (pathetic) raise this year. Have bitten off far more than I'll be able to chew for the upcoming year. Ugh.
        • My brand-new (to me) car is back at Carmax having its CD player replaced. For free. I had to drive the hour to S-burg yesterday and leave it there. I'm currently driving a red car with a spoiler and a sunroof. Sport-tay! Too bad it's rain-rain-rain all the time and I probably won't get to use the sunroof. I have to go back and get my real car over the weekend.
        • Before we left town, our washing machine had started making thumping and jet-taking-off sounds. We knew we'd have to have a new one--repairing the old one would have cost the same as buying new. By the time we got home, the spin-cycle wasn't removing any water from clothes, so Beast took our dirty vacation clothes to a laundromat Tuesday once he established that it took three drying cycles to get sheets to moist.
        • Consequently, last night we hit Best Buy for a new washer and brought home the floor model which is now in our basement. If you want pictures, it's more-or-less this one.
        • Being a grown-up is really BOR-ING sometimes!
        • In case anyone is going to England, "The Slug and Lettuce," while a catchy/cutesy name for a pub, is only a cover for being a Ruby Tuesday. Yes. We got suckered into that one. Still, astoundingly tasty nachos...for England.
        • OK, so work. I need to go. More prose, less of the bullet-style ... eventually.

        Bad Reader

I found this at Lazygal's blog:

The top 20 book club bestsellers for 2010 from Bookmovement.com [her link--but I ended up actually finding the list here] based on readers' choices are:
        • The Help by Kathryn Stockett
        • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
        • Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay
        • Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford
        • The Next Thing on My List by Jill Smolinski
        • Little Bee by Chris Cleave
        • A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick
        • Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout
        • Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
        • The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows
        • Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
        • The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
        • The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
        • Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
        • The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeannette Walls
        • The Wednesday Sisters by Meg Waite Clayton
        • The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery
        • The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff
        • The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton
        • Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson
Of those, I've read only the last one on the list. There are, perhaps, two or three others I wouldn't mind looking at. The others? Meh. I think it's official: I'm jaded about (ahem) "literary" fiction.

        Today

        • Beast forgot to turn on his alarm today so got up an hour late
        • The plan was for him to make the 7-hour drive to his parents' condo this afternoon to get it on the market (finally) this week
        • Sparky played bass in the praise band at church for the first time
        • Sparky was also nominated to be a youth elder (quite the oxymoron there) today
        • I got to play with a baby during the sermon. Babies like this one are easy: all I had to do to keep her quiet was wiggle my fingers--nonstop--at her, thus calming her parents down
        • I have no idea what the majority of the sermon was about, but I'm still humming the songs
        • Our church packed 400 boxes for Christmas Child this year. That's 1/3 of what we did in our first ten years!
        • I worked from 12 till 5:15. Not a horrible Sunday, and there were no childbirth emergencies in the course of things. Which is a good thing, though I think Mom is ready to have the freakin' baby already.
        • FIL ended up in the ER. Beast bagged the drive back East to sit with him all afternoon. FIL has been admitted due to a high potassium level, a weird-looking bump on his leg, and with 20 extra lbs. of water weight since he left dialysis on Friday. Not sure what's going on.
        • Youth group was fun, if weird. I was the only grownup there. Thank God they are good kids.
        • Beast has bagged the whole trip. He doesn't want to leave town with his dad in the hospital. He has a good lead on someone interested in the condo, so his aunt is going to do a showing tomorrow and then he will know whether to call the real estate agent or not.
        • This house is so not-clean. It's gonna take hours to get things sorted out before Thanksgiving. I should probably be working on that now. Hah!
        • Everyone in this house is fucking EXHAUSTED.

        Randomosity

        • VERY cool Lighthouse library. It's decided: I want to live in a lighthouse, if I get a crate like this periodically.

        • Of course, nowadays, this site would work just as well if I were stranded alone with internet access (and no books) for months at a time.

        • I love this interchange (from here) primarily because I've had very similar ones at work:
        • Customer: “I need to make a copy of this key because the police need to use this one in an investigation.”
Me: “Ma’am, this key is broken clean in half. I don’t think I can copy this.”
Customer: “Well you see, the police are investigating into the helicopters and I need another key.”
          Me: “The helicopters?”
Customer: “Yes, yes. They break into my car.” *picking up a flashlight from the checkout counter* “Oh! I wonder if this flashlight is helicopter proof.”
Me: “Uh…I don’t know to be honest.”
Customer: “Well. The helicopters always make things stop working suddenly.”
(She clicks the flashlight on and off until suddenly it no longer turns on.)
Customer: “Ah, there. Not helicopter proof. They’re in my veins, you know.”

        • This is a pretty good song. Thanks to Amy for pointing me to the person who found it.

        • One of my favorite library websites is this one. I've had a couple of these conversations over the years, which is why I frequently say (mostly only in my head), "PEOPLE ARE STUPID."

        • Fonts are important. The hat says so. Mostly, I just wanted to mention the hat again since I've been reading his blog for almost 6 years now.

        • And you wonder why librarians are crazy? Well, perhaps you have not been wondering that, but now you know why you should.

        • It's always great when friends talk turkey to one another in public, especially when one of them is an idiot.
That's all I got right now. Everything in my real life is so chaotic that this is the best I can do in terms of blogging.

        Home

We are there, after 3000 miles of road under our wheels, and richer in furniture and 'stuff' from Mom's estate. I have things to deliver to the nephews up the road.  We have yet another piece of the "set" my dad made--this makes #4--and a cedar chest.  Those are the big things that are (probably) staying here, along with some (more) photos and papers and odds and ends.

The highlights (and a few lowlights) of the trip:
        • I can strike Kansas from my list of "states I have never visited", and I'm pretty glad of that, though there was a great steak place in Salina....
        • The Best Ever tortilla chips at a restaurant in Colorado Springs, along with what Beast describes as The Best Margarita Ever. The chips were so good we asked for a takeout order and snacked on them in the car the rest of the trip.
        • Unfortunately, something else at that meal did not set well in my G.I. tract, so I spent that night inspecting porcelain rather more closely than I normally would do in a hotel room. I think I'm off rice and beans for quite awhile as a result. [We are pretty sure, however, that it was the sopapillas, since that's the only thing I ate that Beast didn't eat--and he had no problems at all.]
        • The Beaumont in Ouray, as mentioned in the previous post. Stunning setting, but lacking couple of minor conveniences. However, the spa and massage, and the balcony martini bar all more than made up for the excruciatingly slow internet and inefficient breakfast service. I wish my dad had lived long enough to see the inside of this place....
        • I want to live in Ouray...but only part of the year.
        • The drive from Ouray to Ogallala is L - O - N - G, even if you sleep 3/4 of the way. And losing electricity and then hot water at the hotel is a sucky way to end a day like that. We never did get a hot shower there.  And the 'cuisine' we chose was less-than-fab as well.  Oh well.
        • The only bad weather we had was unbelievable heat in Ogallala (over 100 when we pulled up in front of the hotel) and the big storm overnight in Des Moines last night, which I slept through.
        • We saw a doe and her fawn in my sister's backyard. Just passing through.
        • I only broke one fingernail all week, and managed not to chew on any of them!  Woo hoo!
        • The sandals I wore ... I never want to wear them again. I love them, but I'm really tired of them.
        • I shouldn't check work email on the road. I just get cranky.
        • I am no longer able to run around at high elevations without stopping every 3 minutes to breathe, i.e. pant. So ... outta ... shape ...! Crazy! Sux.
        • Three vodka-tonics plus a Lemon Drop is probably too much alcohol for me in the 4 hours prior to bedtime. Especially at 8000 feet elevation.
        • It has rained a LOT this spring in the Midwest! Everything was green and wet, rivers were overflowing and crops were flooded in some fields. Even Colorado was green(ish).
Having now taken a bath and finally started to wind down for the day (almost 10 hours after we arrived home), I think I'm going to head to bed.

A good trip, all in all. Single best thing: Beast's back was not injured this time, and he feels fine tonight.

        What.A.Day.

        • Boring Bible Study text this morning. The pastor even said so. lol

        • Technology issues leading to a cretinously slow database at work.

        • The mere thought of vomit on surfaces at work.

        • Laughing with E. for 10 minutes over a book of tongue-twisters, followed by mooning with her over an adorable book of poems "by" dogs. I love our children's librarian.

        • Too much processed sugar in one afternoon.

        • 14 straight hours away from the house.

        • Email from church about a 12-year-old in our community who has an inoperable brain tumor which sprung a leak in her head. She's (back) in the hospital, in pain but improving. Terrifying and very sad.

        • Email from The Boss at 1:30 p.m.: "I need some statistics for your report, which I have to present to the Board tonight."

        • Registration forms I've been requesting for two months (and worrying about for another month before that) which arrived last week...are due on Monday. Next Monday, 2/8. Ten days to collect everyone's info. Nice organization, PCUSA. Real *$%@!ing nice.

        • I'm not a fan of sloppy joes. Just sayin'.

        • People who can't read music...in a choir. The are nice people. They can't read music. O.M.G.

        • The most boring part EVER assigned to me in that choir. Seriously: I play in 8 out of about 40 measures, maybe 10 notes total.

        • Worry over FIL's complete lack of energy after his last three dialysis visits. Not to mention his laryngitis. And his toe.

        • Beast had a crappy sales call today. And he's far from home and feeling a little out of things.

        • Email from a friend whose life is so tragic. According to her. Well, you made your own bed, Ms. L--now you're lying in it. We all have to lie in our own sh**, you aren't so special. Lots of people have it worse off, and most of us have at least as much going on...but no, YOURS is so much worse. Because it's yours. Yeah. F**k you and the horse you rode in on. I have no tolerance anymore.

        • This was Sparky's birthday. Not that you'd be able to notice, since he was up at 6:45, off to school, then church (study group and dinner) and then back to school for ACT class. He just went up to bed...10 p.m. Happy 17th, Baby Boy! {eyeroll}

        • Blackberry Stoli + tonic + lime = To Die For
I'm taking a mental health day tomorrow. I wish I could do the same for about 6 other people who need the same thing and can't actually do it. But I'm seeing a friend. A real friend. Someone I don't think "f**k you" thoughts about. Ever. Yay.

Oooh, and Beast comes home tomorrow, too. More yay!
        Wednesday, January 13, 2010

        Today's schedule

        • Woke with alarm at 5:20 with the morning DJ flapping his yap about Jay Leno...Conan O'Brien..blah blah blah
        • Eventually hauled my tired butt outta bed, got dressed, got ready for work, prepped the meds, did the hair, etc., etc.
        • Logged into email and Fb, with limited success on the latter
        • Headed out, with meds in their Kleenex (I'm so hi-tek), stopping to collect coat, scarf, phone, work keys
        • Realize I never picked up the paper yesterday. Head down the driveway for that one and today's. Spot one propped against the snow at the edge of the driveway. Fall off edge of driveway into snow, landing on all fours in the snow and nearly somersaulting into the culvert. And the paper wasn't there, either.
        • Go back inside and towel off pants and hands. Head back to truck to leave, again.
        • Back out of driveway, and spot paper 4 inches to the left of my thrashing-in-the-snow marks. Swear, stop car, get paper, finish pulling out of driveway.
        • Arrive at Bible Study late for the second week in a row. Reach into pocket for meds and realize I grabbed the wrong wadded-up Kleenex. No meds today. Crap
        • Bible Study/Sparky's "I'm up and ready to head to school" text/drive to work
        • Picklist in the dark library, woo hoo
        • Leave note on Fb cancelling study time at church this afternoon
        • Dink around killing time doing minor project work before leaving for meeting
        • Spend 20 minutes convincing a coworker that she REALLY, REALLY needs to see the doctor NOW and get answers YESTERDAY about this weird pile of symptoms
        • Leave for lunch. I have no memory of the hour-long drive to the meet-up place. Scary
        • Lovely lunch with wonderful people, marred only by having to wait over 30 minutes after ordering for our food to arrive. It wasn't quite worth the wait, but the company was good which nearly makes up for it, right?
        • So the meeting started 30 minutes late, oh well. And lasted over two hours. And was, mostly, lots of fun. I actually love these people. Well, most of them... lol
        • Drive an hour home. See Sparky for the first time today, and find out how today's finals went. Relax for an hour, talk to Beast for the first time today, and watch 45 minutes of ST:TNG with Sparky. Also repair internet connection so that I can FINALLY access all of Facebook, just in time to leave again...
        • ...for Bell Choir at church. Progress, MUCH of it, is made there. Help break down tables and clean up the room for the next group, who definitely won't need padded tables and bell stands, etc.
        • Drive half an hour to FIL's apartment. The dressing on his toe needs changing. Home Health will only do every other day, so we are responsible for the rest of the days--it needs to be done daily. Chat with FIL and tonight's CNA, who is super-splendiferous, for an hour or so after changing dressing
        • Drive half an hour home. Say goodnight to Sparky. Start typing this while switching between CSI:NY on CBS and NCIS on cable.
        I am
        SO
        FREAKING
        TIRED!

        Searches on the old blog

I haven't had a tracker installed on this blog for long enough for these sorts of weird-o-rama searches to happen much. But I got a hankering to do this kind of post since I haven't for ages and ages:
        • meander--that's the title of a very meandering post. Probably didn't help in the definition of the word, if that's what the Googler was doing.
        • wedding passages--These are good ones, IMHO, if you are searching.
        • all getting haircuts--Yep, all of us got our hair cut on the same day in 2008. Pretty exciting stuff. Why would anyone search those words? I can't come up with a scenario.
        • furniture projectblogspot--Part ? of the Summer of Refinishing.
        • link:http://bradshawofthefuture.blogspot.com/--lol I hope this made the blog's author as happy as it made me to write about it.
        • beth orton stolen car radio edit--The radio edit was a different song in the list. I liked that one, as well as Beth's, but I bet that didn't really help in answering whatever question was at hand.
        • perfect stage crew--We still own it. It has nothing whatever to do with my regular life, so it was probably a useless hit for the person who clicked over here. Sorry.
        • jenn!fer g!ltrop--This refers to a very embarrassing moment in library lore, which unfortunately a person with this name was tangentially involved. I occluded the name here; I should have done so on the old blog as well. {shrug}

        More proof of wonkiness

If you are afraid of OCD behavior, you might want to skip right past this post.

I've been tracking my reading for almost 20 years, journaling what books I've read and (usually) some thoughts about the book. Obviously this predates blogging, but my first blog was my book blog because it seemed like a purely natural, obvious thing to do.

Along with the journal, about 10 years ago I started a card-file. Yes, like a 'real' librarian, I have a catalog! The drawer will probably be full in the next year or so.

As I was writing up and filing the cards for last year today, it felt like all the authors I was searching the file for started with W. At the end, I counted up and there weren't that many, but it occurred to me that it might be sort of fun to track that number as I do random other things about my reading. Fun, and EASY!

So without further ado, the author count for my 2009 reading.
        A - 2
        B - 6
        C - 6
        D - 4
        E - 3
        F - 3
        G - 3
        H - 5
        I - 0
        J - 2
        K - 7
        L - 1
        M - 7
        N - 1
        O - 1
        P - 5
        Q - 2
        R - 3
        S - 8
        T - 3
        U - 0
        V - 1
        W - 9
        X - 0
        Y - 0
        Z - 0
(+2 titles without authors, only editors)
Clearly, W wasn't all that huge. Interestingly, I tripled the number of Q authors this year, though.
