Remember

I've just read two blog posts on two completely different blogs in which the writer is wondering why someone younger, thinner, whateverer seems to so unhappy. As someone who is not younger or thinner, I can relate a little.

However, I'm also the one who "seems to have it all"--nice house, cool car, great job, wonderful husband, smart kid in (a private) college...all of which I'm so grateful for--and I can tell you right now my life is not happy. In fact, my life hasn't been worry-free in a really long time. Sure, there are hours when I'm pretty calm and stress-free, but there are at least 2 hours every day that are Hell. The only difference on a daily basis is which circle of Hell: immersion in boiling blood, upside-down burial in shit, or worse.

So, again, I plead with you all, remember that everyone -- E V E R Y O N E -- you meet is carrying a heavy load. Sometimes you can see it, or you've been told about it, or you can empathize for whatever reason; more often you have no idea. Because people are astoundingly good actors right up until they break into millions of pieces.

Incidentally, this post may only appear for a few hours, tonight and tomorrow morning, before mysteriously disappearing. Those of you know (a bit) about what's going on will know why. The whole thing is on the table now, so no more hiding stuff.

Wrong Number

I have a large collection of "Wrong Number" emails in my Gmail account. This is what happens when you use a VERY popular Bible verse as your email addy. At least they are generally clean emails....

I always love seeing you and chatting and just sharing a moment of our lives together.   Call me or I'll call you.

I've been really busy this summer taking care of my grandkids.  My son is divorcing his wife so she is no longer in the home so I need to be there to help out while my son works.  It's really kept me very busy, but I enjoy and love my grandkids dearly so its' all good.

I look forward to seeing you soon.  Love Rich

Take care my friend,  Ilo[...].

In this case, they are clean, and kind of sad. I get mail between these people all the time, and I have replied to all of them more than once letting them know that whoever they are trying to include in the conversation, it's not getting to them. But I enjoy reading their little slices of life, even as I reply about every two to three months to let them know it's still me, not Whoever, they're writing to.

Is it just my imagination, or is Rich trying to move in on Bob's (presumably) wife?

Quandary

In my GReader feeds there is one category in which I have filed two blogs, and the comments from one of those blogs.

Stop, just a minute! I have to preface this whole post by saying that I'm really really far behind in my RSS feed-reading: there are nearly 300 400-omg total unread posts there, mostly library-related (221) or potential memes-to-do-when-I-have-time (182). So I'm behind. OK.

However, in this one folder, there are just 3 feeds. Since June 29, there have been 53 posts accrue in that folder. One blog has not posted in that time, or if it has, I've read those posts (all, maybe, two of them). The other two--blog + comments--account for the rest. I'm having great difficulty gearing up to read because the main blog posts are a series based on a speech. I read part one when it was posted. [Yes, apparently there are 8 or 9 posts which total one speech--thank God I didn't have to sit through the whole thing, eh?] The other 40-something links are comments to the above posts.

I don't want to read this speech. I should, so I know what's going on in my field as a whole, but on the other hand based on the "intro" I'm not sure I should. I want to strangle the person who wrote it--a not unfamiliar feeling, to be fair--and I'm close to 100% positive that every comment will be "OH U SO WUNNAFUL!! Y DINT WE TINK UV DAT?!!!!" I'm not sure I can deal with the posts themselves, and reading the comments will depress me because it means that there are a large number of Shovers and Makers in libraries who are completely ridiculously STOOPUD! Not to mention, easily swayed by pretty words and narcissism.

On the other other hand, none of that should surprise me at this point. There are a lot of really stupid people doing management in libraries. I will probably end up reading the posts, getting pissed off, and NOT reading the comments. Unless I read 'em all, but only while drinking a bottle of Everclear (should probably make sure someone's around to keep me from posting drunk).

EDIT, 7/15: Having considered the situation from multiple angles since posting this, I've decided to "mark as read" the whole kit-and-caboodle of those 53 (now 56) posts/comments, and unsubscribe from the blog itself. Will keep receiving the comments for now, at least this week. Life's too short and complicated to worry about other people's stoopud.

Totally What Some Library Patrons are Like

A Clear And Self-Centered Danger:
(Bookstore | Boston, MA, USA)

(A couple approaches the information desk while I’m manning it. They are probably in their mid-60s.)

Me:  ”Can I help you find something?”
Customer:  ”Yes, where are your paperbacks by Clancy?”
Me:  ”They’re right over here in fiction; follow me.”
(They tag along behind me as I lead them the 10 steps over to the fiction wall.)
Me:  ”He’s this whole shelf, and part of the next one.  Was there anything else you were looking for today?”
Customer:  ”Other stuff like him. You know, like Woods, Connelly, and Lescroart.”
Me:  ”Well, they’re all here in fiction too. It’s alphabetical by author, so you can work your way down from here.  Woods is right at the end by the window.”
Customer:  *peevish* “Why can’t you people just put all the stuff I like together?!”
(At this point his wife, who has been silent the whole time, chimes in.)
Customer’s Wife: “Because the world STILL doesn’t revolve around you, dear.” *to me* “His mother has a lot to answer for!”

Oh how I adore Not Always Right!

From the (Wrong) Mailbag

Because my email address is a relatively common Bible verse, I get lots of email from people I don't know. About 3 years ago I started labeling and saving some of the better, more amusing or weird, epistles and posting them here. I haven't done one of them for awhile, so why not tonight? And let's pick on Bob. I do notify people when I get personal emails that are not meant for me. Usually that ends things and I never hear from them again. But Bob? Bob's a special guy who clearly doesn't actually read his email, since I've got four emails directly from him. The first one is a LONG conversation between Bob and Lona, with Dick showing up at the end. My feeling is that if you keep CCing me after I've told you I don't know you, those emails become my property, and I can post them for the world to read.

Pray, and I am praying often. That Gods will be clear. Trust in Him.

I'm glad you are safe hopefully the sand going to come back. It's funny John send that to you would be spooky if you would get the same from another person I didn't got any kids last night I have a bunch of candy. I was thinking of you this morning I was made coffee what you roasted for me and I watched the caramel color foam coming out I wanted to share it with you I know how excited you are about your coffee I'm making water and drinking a lot than I'm using the ozone machine. I was able to sleep a few hours here and there I'm praying but things are very confusing the last few days I don't really understand what it's going on it's not clear what you are looking for. You just mentioned since from February you have the feelings you would not able to spend more than 2-weeks with me at times and the other hand you send an e-mail in October about you having problem I'm not able to dedicate my self completely to you I'm confused by this. I know the medical issue you have it's not easy on you on us I try to be there for you anyway I can if you let me I give you the support and try understand your needs in many ways I love you and it's never been a burden for me and I'm scared to . I don't know really want you want I can see couple of things ; one of them you are changing you mind about us about our relationship rather than exclusive you rather have it open and you would be able to be free and do things freely with out guilt; another one is about N... she is helping you and you are able to connect with her in a spiritual way and I know it's important and I know you need that and I'm grateful for that and the time you two spent together you built a motional connection also. I'm not sure because our exclusive relationship and what is our agreement put pressure on you couple of days before you left this why you come to the conclusion I should hold on with the trip - because you are not sure if that connection with N... grow stronger or not since you left so you want to find out and see where things are and leave me on the hold. I'm maybe wrong on all of this and what ever it is causing this sudden issues I hope and I pray that God show the way and clear things up to you to us and we be together and able to support each other like we did the last nine years and I hope N... continue to be not just you friend but our friend and be our support in this difficult times .

Love, Lona

Thank you for the letter you express yourself very well. I am really seeking God in my life and feel like I am David facing Goliath. I am thinking about retiring, wrapping up the business in December and moving down to Costa Rica and Panama. I consider my health issue priority. Having three phlebotomy in October has brought the importance of my health Straight to my face. It does seem wise at this point to download all factors that create stress or a sense of urgency in my life. I will be going to the flamingo AA meeting this afternoon, and want to hook up with Don H... for my sponsor here. I do want you to know that I have no romantic notions for N..., she is just a friend sent to help me out with my health issues. I do feel pressure from our relationship. Right now, I don't think I should feel pressure from anything for the sake of my health. I really feel like God is telling me to take a year off from all responsibilities. I will continue my financial responsibilities for you . I know this is not which you want to hear, but I cannot handle the stress of worrying about our relationship. I am going to the meeting now to work on my sobriety, sanity, and try to get my heart and my blood to calm down. I need a year to fish, golf, walk on the beach and hang out doing very little, and having no worries or responsibilities. I hope it cures my Goliath.

Hello Dear,

I understand what you are saying you don't need any pressure which is would affect you healing process and definitely I don't want to create any more for you. I'm sorry If I was unable to leave up to your expectation in our relationship and that put any pressure on you. You are a wonderful person and I pray and I have the faith that you are going to defeat your Goliath. I watched Joel today and he started the program talking about David standing just with the 5 stones in his hand against the enemy but he had the trust in God. Joel said God could turn ordinary things to extra ordinary and things are already in our rich just like David had the stones we just have to have our faith and trust in God. He also talked about Moses about as they going thru the mountains and they got to the water front of them but because he belived in God with out knowing it God already prepare him he had the stick and the miracle happened because he belived and you are one of those who belives in him and he already planned yours to just have keep trusting in him and walk with him. It's interesting you wrote the letter and telling me all this is you started it just like Joel did his program David facing Goliath. He maybe already prepared us to you and me when he brought G... and R... in our life and we saw them they leaved their own life but their love for each other was always their even they was just BFF and that was good enough to see them thru their most difficult time and they was their for each other with out any expectations. It's difficult right now for both of us but I trust in Him he will be going to be their for us I went thru difficult time in my whole life even though feel like I'm by myself against many things I know I'm not alone he is always their I just have to have the faith and let Him show the way and guide me he always shine the light on the end of the tunnel.
After all this said I hope you are doing good and had a great experience at the convention and keep that positive thinking going.

Hi Dear,
thank you for taking the pressure off of me. I feel so much pressure on me from so many things, that I know so much of it is just a condition of my mind. I am praying a lot and trying to figure out how to handle this feeling of being in danger of losing my life. I met with John M... today and we hung out in his pool for a couple of hours. I talked to him about my life and my thinking that I should retire or move here. But the Phils so many emotions that are making me feel responsible to be back there in the USA. He really encouraged me to just move here and forget about the USA. He said my mind or my intelligence is telling me what to do, but my emotions are saying but this and but that, etc. he said on my gravestone they will not print that BobS... was very responsible. He strongly advises me to that worry about anything. He's going to get me in touch with a good doctor that comes to Liberia a couple of days a week. I'm thinking I better get my blood tested in a week or two since I had to have 3 phlebotomy is last month. I did not talk to John at all about us. Were planning on going golfing Wednesday.
Tomorrow I meet with Don H... who is going to be my sponsor here. We are going to meet from one o'clock until five o'clock, the flamingo meeting starts at 5:30 PM. They delayed the convention two days in a row because of roads and bridges washed out. So we didn't go. Most people didn't has it rained a whole bunch last week. Turns out they only had the convention for 1 1/2 days, about 40 people showed up.
Thank you for being levelheaded and taking a spiritual approach to what I am doing. I don't want you to think that it's anything you've done, because I'm certain it's just a problem within me and I don't know what it is . I just know that I do need to figure it out and I need whatever time it takes to figure out what's going on with me. I am very flaky and uncomfortable in my own skin right now. Even answering business e-mails gets me stressed easily. It seems like I've come to the end of my rope as far as being able handle any kind of stress. It is probably fear. I am really not ready to be dead or disabled. I even wonder about the stress of wrapping everything up in December. John says just stay here in Costa Rica and wrap everything up from here. it's day number eight here in Costa Rica for me and I'm just now feeling like I might get relaxed . I'm a little nervous because Dr. W... and still doesn't have the Spain shot, and I'm off all medication and hormones right now. The BP pressure runs about 140/85. I heart beats up about 15 beats a minute, but that's probably because I stopped taking the Toporol. Well enough of that kind of stuff. I just keep praying and reading meditation stuff and I brought my Bible, so I think a better read some of that stuff right now I've got myself all worried again. I think of you every day and I pray for you in the morning and during the day and at night.

Hello Dear,

It's too bad the convention was canceled I know you was looking forward to it.
Seem like lot's of things going thru you mind you know you having this medical issues but you are having good doctors and they monitoring you all the time you are taking good care of you self I don't think you should worried that much it's could create more harm for you than good. I think you need to relax you are creating lots of stress on your self maybe you just need to take one day at the time and you need to make choices for yourself what ever it is benefit your needs and you have to know you can leave with that decision. It's is easy to people tell you their opinion but right know you are very motional very vulnerable state and what ever they say it's make a lots of since to you right now but you have to ask your self that what really you want to do? - give some time for yourself and you will find the answers. I don't know what ever it's with you since early summer I noticed you talk to me about things but you never want to hear my opinion or if I said anything you always took it in the negative way and this behave of yours doesn't make since to me because all this years we was always able to talk about anything and we seemed like always find the answer together we balanced each other out to find the right solution. Right know seems you are looking for that support to anyone to anywhere from people who knows you is a casual friend and leave me on the side line and it's ok for me I'm a good lessoner and I'm not trying to find the answers for things any more why this happened or what behind all this which caused all this. I'm not going to hang on the thread by you about my trip any longer I decided I'm going and you can pick me up or please make arrangement with the shuttle I'm arriving Saturday at 2-clock. I'm planning to stay is planned or maybe coming back sooner. I do not want you to worry about this you do your things what ever it is I'm not going to ask questions about your doings if you want to share them it's up to you. I'm planing to do my things just hang out and lay on the beach long walks and relax . I hope you had a good connection today with Don and have fun with John tomorrow play well and tell hi for me.
I belive everything is going to be work out ok with you I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Bob: Thanks for the email. I understand Lona's letters and her feelings. She loves you. You guys have been together a long time and it's my hunch that she knows you pretty well. I sense a real caring for you in her letters. I sense real love. Love is a good thing. Its good medicine. I think her encouragement to you to get back to living one day at a time is very good...thats what you need, and her suggestion to start getting positive is right on.

Breathe in positive thoughts. Exhale all negative ones. Breathe in positive energy. Let go of negative. Forget the past. Live in the here and now 5 min at a time. Be happy. Let yourself be happy. Something inside of you is trying to kill you. As we know, fighting is not the answer. Surrender is. Try meditating on surrender...a lot. See what yu begin to think about and feel. Surrender. Give up....Let God work a miracle in your life one more time.......Breathe in Love let go of fear. Breathe in love...let go of fear.....Love is all around you.....Let it in. Let people love you until you can love yourself again..........

I don't know what you should do Bob. I just believe you need to get honest with yourself. Really honest. Surrender. Surrender your will to HIS. SEEEK HIM, and what HE wants. Meditate on the truth. What is the truth? You've been lying a long time, its probably become a habit....but its okay no judgement...the past is over...begin a new life today Bob...and live it one day at a time.

I believe God will tell you what to do in regards to Lana. Try being quiet and talk to God. And Mostly LISTEN to him.

After a period of meditation and prayer , just close your eyes and open your Bible and see what the word of God has to say to you. His will is also in the Bible. He can give you many answers there........Remember one thing. Lonna loves you. And love does not harm, but seeks goodness.......

Good luck. SSSSSSShhhhhhhh quiet your mind and listen to Him...He's inside of you.........Listen to Love Listen to the man inside you,,,,,the real Bob S... ....find him and consult him.....

I love you Bob. I will be praying for you this week and call me any time after 4.

Dick

  • VERY cool Lighthouse library. It's decided: I want to live in a lighthouse, if I get a crate like this periodically.

  • Of course, nowadays, this site would work just as well if I were stranded alone with internet access (and no books) for months at a time.

  • I love this interchange (from here) primarily because I've had very similar ones at work:
  • Customer: “I need to make a copy of this key because the police need to use this one in an investigation.”
Me: “Ma’am, this key is broken clean in half. I don’t think I can copy this.”
Customer: “Well you see, the police are investigating into the helicopters and I need another key.”
    Me: “The helicopters?”
Customer: “Yes, yes. They break into my car.” *picking up a flashlight from the checkout counter* “Oh! I wonder if this flashlight is helicopter proof.”
Me: “Uh…I don’t know to be honest.”
Customer: “Well. The helicopters always make things stop working suddenly.”
(She clicks the flashlight on and off until suddenly it no longer turns on.)
Customer: “Ah, there. Not helicopter proof. They’re in my veins, you know.”

  • This is a pretty good song. Thanks to Amy for pointing me to the person who found it.

  • One of my favorite library websites is this one. I've had a couple of these conversations over the years, which is why I frequently say (mostly only in my head), "PEOPLE ARE STUPID."

  • Fonts are important. The hat says so. Mostly, I just wanted to mention the hat again since I've been reading his blog for almost 6 years now.

  • And you wonder why librarians are crazy? Well, perhaps you have not been wondering that, but now you know why you should.

  • It's always great when friends talk turkey to one another in public, especially when one of them is an idiot.
That's all I got right now. Everything in my real life is so chaotic that this is the best I can do in terms of blogging.

Dear parents, our choir needs a name!

We are planning a meeting for the parents sometime in August. Information will be sent out as soon as possible.

New nickname?

Someone at work, while watching me sign on to our ILS, misread the login and said "Catwoman?!"

No, but I like it. Now, if only I looked like (or even could sing like!) Eartha Kitt....

Exceptionally vague

So, there are two people I know, one a former friend and the other is someone I met because of the first person. Let's call them R and D. It's been at least 18 months since I started pulling away from R. In virtually every interaction, I noticed a distinct inability to step away from R's worldview and countenance other people's feelings. At first I thought it was me--because, well, isn't that how we're trained?

The first crack, admittedly, began as hearsay from another friend (J) who told me some stories about working with (for) R that...relit the painting. It was like suddenly seeing the young woman in this picture when before all you've seen is the old woman. Or, perhaps more symbolically, the other way around. But I'm always leery of hearsay, and cracks can be mended.

About this time, R asked me for a job recommendation, which I was happy to provide. I never received a thank you, even though I spent a great deal of time figuring out how to finesse some details about how to write a recommendation for someone with whom I'd worked only about 6 hours total over the time we'd known each other. The lack of an expression of gratitude sort of annoyed me, but then friends do annoy each other sometimes, right?

Meanwhile, the relationship between R and D was growing and seemed to be thriving. I didn't know D well, having had a total of one conversation in strained circumstances. But I got the sense of a deep, kind, smart and intelligent person, someone it would be fun and interesting to get to know better. Because they both seemed happy, I was happy for them.

The crack widened almost imperceptibly when R--who is proud to be at least agnostic--made a very snide, very rude generalized remark about my religion in a discussion about the Religious Right. Yes, I'm a Christian, and the nutcases drive me crazy, but this comment was a bit like having a stranger slug your little sister. When I gently suggested that perhaps R might be over-reacting, I was ignored. Even when I addressed it online rather pointedly, my point of view was not addressed. No apology, no reaction, no private conversation, just...nothing.

Two weeks later, R asked me to pray for a friend who had just had a pretty horrible tragedy befall her and was grieving a desperate loss. Go back and read that: R asked me to pray. Here's (part of) the email:
You know I don't do God. ...If you would add [friend] to your thoughts and prayers, I would appreciate it, and so would she. ...

It feels pretty odd to ask someone else to pray for a friend, when I'm not sure I think it means anything, but I know it would mean something to [the friend], and all that goodwill can't be bad, no matter what you believe, right?

Thanks.
The time stamps says it all: it took me 90 minutes to reply in toto:
I forwarded the basics to our prayer chain and will add the whole family to my list as well. Keep me posted, eh?
So much of my original email was deleted in that final response. I nearly didn't reply at all. I was...stunned. But I did pray, not just for R's friend, but for understanding and clarity for myself. There was, by the way, no follow up regarding R's friend, the prayer, the situation I had been told about...nothing. [which actually was fine, since I gave up tying my prayers to concrete long ago]

A few more conversations, a few more cracks. Then a huge blowup that I know was more about other stuff than the subject over which I blew. Ostensibly, it was judging people by how they speak, but it was (again) very generalized, very mean-spirited, and when I called R on it--because yes, I'll admit I can be thin-skinned over living my whole life in Flyover Country--I got a lot of justification and blah-blah, along with insistence on me being overly sensitive. Not even a hint of "I didn't say what I meant to say very well" from R.

Soon thereafter, I stopped reading online messages from R. And then months later, R friended me on Facebook. And I got the sense that there was some friction between R and D, whom I checked in with periodically but definitely more as a "Friend of R" than as "friend of D." D and I were NOT friends on Facebook. Boundaries.

Two months later, the pattern continuing to escalate, I did the Unfriend thing. Within a week, I got a message asking to "Add R to Your Friends", which I left sit for awhile and eventually confirmed. Within a week those status updates were upsetting me so much that I went back to Unfriend. Which is where we stand now.

Five or six months ago, I started reading R's "private" blog again because it is absolutely hysterically funny. Not intentionally; in fact, from the outside it's pretty pathetic. Which is why it's funny. {meow} I also started reading D's blog to get another point of view, change the lighting of the picture again.

And what a picture it has become. -->

I do not like it when people are malicious to one another. I also do not like prevarication and splitting hairs. I am the first to say that Bill Clinton, in his definitive statement, "I did NOT have sex with that woman, Miss Lewinsky!" was lying. Much like Justice Potter Stewart, I may not be able to define certain things, but I know what they are when I see them. And one other cliché: If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it is, most likely, a duck.

For my part--and a very small part of the drama I am!--I know that allowing R to continue to upset me was/is not healthy. I am slowly learning to remove unhealthy things from my life, so R is gone except in terms of sideshow. The good things R has brought me are many, and I appreciate all of them--R does manage to be surrounded by good things and some exceptional people, which is a little confusing--but possibly the greatest joy is having met D, who was kind and generous with my son at a time when it would have been easier and perfectly acceptable to blow Sparky off completely. For that alone, and for doing it without awareness or expectation of anything from me, D has earned a large portion of friendship.

I like people who don't do things because they "should" but because those things are the right things to do. D is someone like that. R, as I have found out, does things strategically. While I am not willing to say that's always wrong, it's not the way I operate and I don't easily trust people who live their lives always thinking how best to maneuver and control the people and situations around them, both ahead of time and after events have occurred.

Now that I've written all this down, I hope it means I can sleep tonight. Today has been filled with disturbing events and lots of hurtful words and thoughts about R and D and all those in similar situations.

Disturbing

Disturbing Dream #1: I'm visiting a blog-friend, a guy I've never met. Sparky is with me. And I'm very aware that Blog-Friend is getting a very wrong impression about my visit and reason for being there, in spite of Sparky's presence. The guy is just a few years younger than me, never married (that I'm aware of) and in the dream he's living in his college frat house. Uhm. [I'm certain he does NOT live in a frat house, in the non-dream world]

Disturbing Dream #2: My boss has cancelled our contract for IT support to save money. Just a little blip of a thought/dream. I hope it doesn't come true.

Disturbing Facebook update: Upon logging on this morning, I found two updates from one of the youth group members:
soooooo, apparently my parents some how found out about what we said yesterday night, and decided "eh, what the hell...since they all know anyways, we might as well step it up a notch or two...or twelve!!!"
not exactly the way i wanted to start my monday morning...and its not even 7 o'clock yet!!!!!

...apparently since i dont know what im talking about, and im a stupid teenager who doesnt know how to deal with life...thats what i deserve...feeling the love in this house.
I'm trying to figure out what they were talking about last night that would cause this sort of reaction from parents (well, her mom is a little wack sometimes), especially since I was on the phone with her mom during the meeting. Did she somehow overhear something while I was on the phone with her??

Explain, please

Why the hell would someone start a rumor about someone's death? When the someone is a child? When the someone is probably only going to be with us for just a short while longer anyway? How heartless do you have to be to do something like this?

On the 11th Day of Christmas...

...I found this post about being single during the holidays. TOO funny. My favorite is #26, mostly because I know someone that I actually thought that about.

She's now married. Shows you what I know.

Goofiness

Originally published 10/29/09

These things have made me laugh lately:

  • On our way to our youth group outing last week, we passed a small development of houses served by a dead-end road that parallels the main road we were on. There was a sedan driving away from the dead end, and we could see a person's arm out the window. The arm was attached to a leash. The leash was attached to a beagle-sized dog, who was running like mad to keep up with the car.

Houston, we have officially found the laziest person on Earth!!
  • The back of this children's book, which says:

Toddie is a baby just like
    any other--sort of.
    The thing is, he's big.
    Really big.

  • At the same youth event, the trip home was enlived by JT, who always enlivens things (he can be frankly overpoweringly enlivening!). As we sat waiting for a stoplight to change, someone mentioned the temperature on the bank said it was "only" 102. This sent him into a riff that had me nearly crying with laughter: That's not a bank. (It's not? What is it?) It's a building. (OK, well, it's a building that's a bank.) No, it's just a building. The bank is inside the building.

    And so on....

It's possible you needed to be there.

His encore was a video (on his phone) of a dog in a banana costume. The kid has potential as a comedian, but I wouldn't want to be his teacher!!
  • There is a new Grace Kelly book out. It has two titles:

True Grace : the life and death of an American princess (title page) AND
True Grace : the life and times of an American princess (cover)

Well gee, St. Martin's, let's not make a decision at all on the title. It's just TOO difficult!
  • At breakfast yesterday morning at Six Balls--which was uncommonly crowded for some reason--we were seated across the aisle from a booth containing a mom, three kids, and grandma. The oldest child, a girl, was 11 or 12, the two youngest, boys, were 2ish and 5ish. After being fed with pancakes & syrup with chocolate milk, the boys started to ramp it up in the high two-digit decibel range. Mom tried to hush them, grandma tried to hush them, sister tried to hush them. There was singing (Itsy Bitsy Spider, and Where is Thumbkin?). Nothing really worked for very long.

Finally, the ultimatum to end all ultimatums was delivered to them: "If you two don't settle down and be quiet, I'm not taking you to Wal-Mart!!"

Beast and I couldn't look at each other, but he picked up his pen and wrote one word on my placemat: "Blog?"

Srsly? OMG!

I want to laugh at this story about the ultimate in WTF-ness, but the mention that this woman has children makes me wonder if her judgment and skills in childrearing can in any way match her judgment in the choosing of tats.

Still. People are very very strange, and there really is Too Much Information out there about there. Why do people feel it necessary to put even MORE on their persons than is already online? And how does she explain those tattoos to her kids?

Clearly, yet another proof that I'm way-too-freakin'-old.

Loony Tunes

This is what passes for news around here: Police report pits blogger against sheriff

Yes, I know the complainant from work. Plus, I'm pretty sure my mother had run-ins with him at work 30 years ago, three states away from here. This is not late-onset goofiness, it's SOP for the Our Gussie.

Labor Day

There has been VERY little of the laboring today, which is fine. Sparky had a JV game, in which he actually played, this morning. It was a lovely day to sit in the stands. [they lost again]

We are finished with NCIS for the time being, though Season 5. Have started ST:TNG Season 3.

R & B arrive in Chi on Weds. Still working out details about where they'll be sleeping all week, here or with S & S.

And I'm trying to decide how to word an email to the Youth & Ed chair at our church saying "I don't think I can sit thru another 2-hour meeting for which I have exactly 4 minutes to report on the activities with which I am involved. Cut me loose, man, or tell other people to STFU!"

Mostly I just don't want to do ANYthing church-related whatsoever. "Religious people" are annoying the crap out of me today, both those I know and those in the wide world (Obama's speech to children AND on a cataloging listserv if you can believe it).

Sigh.

Actually, I think perhaps I should just turn off the computer and read a very silly book or do a sudoku.

List

  1. All the laundry is done for the week, including the semi-regular bathmat-washing extravaganza, and FIL's stuff, which was forgotten in the washer earlier this week and had to be redone.
  2. The main floor of the house has been Roomba'd and then wet-mopped. Roomba is clean and ready for the next cleaning project.
  3. Dishes needing hand-washing have been washed.
  4. Christmas shopping has commenced and we have our calendars for the house.
  5. Saw the optometrist at Pearle today who agreed that my left distance vision was not measured correctly last month (off by a full point: 8.75 vs. 7.75!) and rewrote it. Because my glasses are less than a week old, Pearle is making a new lens for free.
  6. I have a grocery list made ready for shopping tomorrow.
  7. Also, I'm going back to my old glasses tomorrow and will stick with them until the new lens arrives. These make me seasick. Eating Advil is really not so healthy.
  8. A & K are having a baby boy. Woo-hoo!
  9. MIL's wedding dress is slowing coming back from The Wrinkle Zone. Trud is working on it, alternating vaguely warm iron with gravity to pull out the wrinkles. I told Beast to beat BIL around the head and shoulders this weekend if he's the one who shoved the dress in a shopping bag.
  10. We have our plane tickets for Denver in November.
  11. Sparky received his school bus information today. He snorted. I smiled. It will be posted on the fridge, just in case.
  12. Preseason NFL games have begun. Yippee!
  13. I believe it's bath time after I post this.
But first, two things:
  1. Today's optometrist arrived while I was filling out paperwork today and I noticed as she walked past me (the doctors' pictures are posted). She has very bandy legs, and the skirt she was wearing really emphasized them, as did her very flat, sort of worn-down-looking shoes. I noted later that they aren't worn down, but her feet are large and very wide. Once I sat down for my exam, I rather suddenly realized that the reason she looked unusual was that (I strongly suspect) that she's a transgendered person. Which is fine, but unexpected in this area. She was perfectly helpful, a little odd in her 'bedside manner' (our whole consultation took place with her back turned or with my eyes behind the big frog-face thingy), but otherwise fine.
  2. We drove through Arby's for dinner (hey, I'm an awesome mom, yo!). Sparky ordered a combo and wanted bacon on in, so I said, "A #6 combo, please, with bacon and a Sprite to drink." The machine quacked back at me, "OK, a #6 combo with fries and a Sprite. You want the bacon on the sandwich, right?"
Uh? Doy? As opposed to bacon on the Sprite?
