Blogger discovery

I've just found out that Blogger only gives you access to the most recent 5,000 posts on your blog. Granted, that sounds like a lot, but on my memes blog, I'm up to nearly 6,500 and I can no longer edit the the first two years' worth of posts. Which, ironically, are the ones I'd like to edit and/or delete.

This is annoying. I maybe have to port over the last posts somewhere else. Or maybe block access to to the early years? I dunno....

Blog Challenge

I'm seriously sucking at this blog-every-day thing. Oh well. Here are the last three days' worth:

Friday was supposed to cover [My] Earliest Memory. The one I usually answer with is that I remember sitting on the couch in the living room writing in my mom's address book. Those scribbles, and the address book itself, were still around when I graduated from high school 15 years later. However, I do have some vague memories of the previous suite of living room furniture (prior to the couch on which I was sitting with the address book). I actually remember the earlier stuff mainly because of a nightmare I had back then that involved either monsters hiding behind it or the furniture itself turning into monsters. Isn't it weird that I can remember a nightmare from 45+ years ago?!

Yesterday's topic--Your Favorite Tumblrs--is easy. I don't actually use Tumblr for anything unless someone directs me to one. I don't see the point of them, actually, but then I've never been much of a photo/picture blogger. I do have a lot of favorite blogs. Most are over in the right column. Most of the rest, the memes, are in the sidebar on my memes blog.

And today is about [My] Views on Mainstream Music. Oy. This is a WIIIIIIIIDE-open question, isn't it? I have come to the conclusion that while I admire rap/hip-hop and don't hate it as a genre, I really don't get it. It doesn't, usually, speak to me. Doesn't mean I think rappers are awful people, and I'll sit through the good stuff, and I actually do like some of it...but most of it I can't relate to at all. Mainstream pop I don't mind--it hasn't changed much over the years; now we have autotune and EDM, 10-15 years ago it was boy bands and harmonizing, when I was a kid it was squeaky-clean bouncy bubblegum. I don't mind it, but there's a limit to what I can ingest. I have gone off heavy rock, and feel the same way about it as I do about pop: a little goes a long way. I'd link to my Spotify account so you can see what I listen to, but it's got my real name on it, so I'll just list the first dozen randomized songs on my Starred list (which currently has 314 songs on it):
  • Pumped Up Kicks (Foster the People)
  • When You're Gone (Avril Lavigne)
  • Ballroom Blitz (Sweet)
  • Kiss Me Deadly (Lita Ford)
  • Meet Me in the Back (Melissa Etheridge)
  • Shooby (Nicole Mullen)
  • Rockferry (Duffy)
  • Good Life (OneRepublic)
  • Cry Baby (Janis Joplin)
  • Mouth Wedding (Transglobal Underground)
  • 99 Luftballons (Nena)
  • Authority Song (John Mellencamp)

Time passages

  • Yesterday was Homecoming at Beast's & my (and Sparky's) college. Sparky was sick, but the weather was gorgeous.
  • Our team lost. Booo...
  • Thirty years ago this fall I was more homesick than ever before (or since) and also exhilarated by college life.
  • It was fun to go back, weird to sit in a dorm and listen to boys/men shout swear words in the halls (not to mention the 100 dB rap music), and good to see the campus looking great.
  • The campus library hasn't changed except for some of the books moving around. And there are more computers, of course.
  • We had to come home last night because I work today. And teach Sunday School, too.
  • Some of the people I work with SUCK BALLS!
  • Most of the people I work with are simply awesome, even inspirational.
  • The Head of HR for the City--and thus us--informed us that we full-timers should all be working 45+ hour weeks until a new director and children's librarian are hired. Excuse the FUCK outta me but, with one exception (see above) we already DO work over our hours on a regular basis, beeyotch.
  • Last week is over. Thank God.
  • I'm afraid to get a flu shot because so many people around me have been sick in the past week; what if the shot along with their germs makes me sick!?
  • Pinto, the youngest guinea pig, tried to commit seppuku Friday when I cleaned their cage: he leapt out of my arms onto the top of the cage and nearly fell off the back. Maybe we shoulda named him Spaz....
  • I met someone for the first time last Sunday who was sure I worked in the same community as him (he's a firefighter several towns to our east). Nope. Really. NOPE!
  • Beast and I got to new cell phones on Monday. They are officially smarter than us. lol
  • I'm glad the professional refs are back. A week too late for the Packers, but...oh well, right?
  • Having badgered Beast into making a doctor's appointment to get his cough and his "numbers" checked out, I think I need to get in to see MY doctor as well about some weird new not-so-fun things my body is doing.
  • Time to get going: Sunday School, breakfast with Beast, work (post-upgrade, I hope everything works!), then home for the Packer game (and pizza?)

Twitter

So.

I have a Twitter account -- no, I'm not linking to it here because it's a little too obvious who I am there, but if you know me and want it, let me know -- not that I tweet much. But because it mentions that I work in a library, and because MANY tweets are about library stuff, and because I follow other library tweeters, I get random followers who think I'm "somebody."

I'm not.

Today's addition is someone named Chelles!e B D@ncer who apparently writes "er0tic" fiction. Yesterday was about loan reconsolidation (or something), and last week I was found by a marketing CEO and something called Keep[suburb name]Cops. Earlier random followers include a HVAC company and a roofing company.

Those are just the ones I haven't blocked because they are skanky or phishy.

And that is all the news that's fit to print today. Sadly.

One of those days

Couldn't sleep last night--stupid Restless Legs. Go ahead and laugh. I hope if you find it amusing, you develop this in the future. It's fucking ANNOYING, and useless to complain about. Beast was already asleep so I did what I did in our 20s: crept as quietly as possible out of bed with my crosswords and came downstairs to sleep on the couch. I did sleep, eventually, but not well and surely not long enough.

Which wasn't a great start, but everything went pretty well at home.

Then I got to work. Had a thoroughly useless staff meeting, experienced two rounds of Total Condescension brought on by asking what I thought were fairly innocuous questions, had to re-enter ALL login/password stuff on EVERY site I use EVERY day MULTIPLE times over the course of the next four hours, put out about five forest fires for assorted people (many of which were also tech issues), and simmered.

Ugh.

Probably a good thing Beast is at a business meeting/dinner tonight. At least he doesn't have to bear the brunt of my craptastic day.

On the other hand, I got a fun package in the mail today, and there's more on the way, and I only have 3 more days this week to work until the mission trip starts.

Testing

I am actually typing this on my Nook from our hotel room on our last night in Italy. I love my Nook! Though I will say it's not very easy to type on.

I will have much to say when I get home and have a proper keyboard instead of a touchy touchscreen on which to type. Ciao!

Been another long wait

And yeah, what a month March has been.  Short version:
  • spent a lot of time in hospitals with Beast and FIL on visits planned and unplanned
  • worked, a lot, at work and at home, on work-related stuff
  • played mini-golf in the library
  • got even fatter
  • wrecked the truck
Now, it looks like my page layout is fucked. Shoot. I should try to figure out why. I seems to only be weird on Chrome. IE looks fine. Sigh.

The main reason I started this post is to warn people that poetry month is coming up, so there will be more regular posts next months. Like, daily.

EDIT: but now the layout is fine. Maybe it's my computer....

Randomosity

  • VERY cool Lighthouse library. It's decided: I want to live in a lighthouse, if I get a crate like this periodically.

  • Of course, nowadays, this site would work just as well if I were stranded alone with internet access (and no books) for months at a time.

  • I love this interchange (from here) primarily because I've had very similar ones at work:
  • Customer: “I need to make a copy of this key because the police need to use this one in an investigation.”
Me: “Ma’am, this key is broken clean in half. I don’t think I can copy this.”
Customer: “Well you see, the police are investigating into the helicopters and I need another key.”
    Me: “The helicopters?”
Customer: “Yes, yes. They break into my car.” *picking up a flashlight from the checkout counter* “Oh! I wonder if this flashlight is helicopter proof.”
Me: “Uh…I don’t know to be honest.”
Customer: “Well. The helicopters always make things stop working suddenly.”
(She clicks the flashlight on and off until suddenly it no longer turns on.)
Customer: “Ah, there. Not helicopter proof. They’re in my veins, you know.”

  • This is a pretty good song. Thanks to Amy for pointing me to the person who found it.

  • One of my favorite library websites is this one. I've had a couple of these conversations over the years, which is why I frequently say (mostly only in my head), "PEOPLE ARE STUPID."

  • Fonts are important. The hat says so. Mostly, I just wanted to mention the hat again since I've been reading his blog for almost 6 years now.

  • And you wonder why librarians are crazy? Well, perhaps you have not been wondering that, but now you know why you should.

  • It's always great when friends talk turkey to one another in public, especially when one of them is an idiot.
That's all I got right now. Everything in my real life is so chaotic that this is the best I can do in terms of blogging.

It's good to have friends who don't always agree

...right?

It's also really hard when a good friend gets 'very verbal' on Facebook with someone in my family. Hard to take sides--although I agree with the family member heaps more than I agree with the friend--since the subject is freedom of speech. I can't, therefore, tell her to shut up on my Facebook wall. Well, ok, I could but she wasn't that vicious, just stupid. OK, I can call her that here since she doesn't know about this blog. She's full of Faux News bullshit and right-wing conservative stoopudutee.

Yes, I have friends like that. Don't you? If not, you should. Always good to have another point of view in the mix, eh?

Heh

This made me giggle--and I don't even know who Landon Donovan is.

If only life really worked this way....

The three responses I got sound pretty interesting.

RSS

Grr, just playing around with Google stuff and checked in with Google Reader. I found that Bloglines has not been working right, and I've missed about 2 dozen comments on my blogs that have NEVER POSTED on Bloglines.

So, it looks like I'm swapping to Reader. That isn't the only feeds that weren't posting, but jeez...I'm annoyed.

Epic

OMFG.

I work in a public library, so I'm very well aware of Teh Stoopud. But, jeez, THIS tops it all: how do you get to Facebook? Read the comments. Stunning.

Update and further thoughts. I don't actually agree with the summary, however.

Found in my work email this morning

a.k.a. Do Not Read This While Eating

The first paragraph isn't so bad, just a concise explanation of daily life with technology lately.
A patron called me over to it tonight to ask if [station #3] was on. The green light was on the monitor, but the screen was black. When I restarted, the tower was making some sketchy noises. The screen flashed in and out and then came to the black DOS start up screen that asks if you want to start windows in normal mode. I said yes, then the screen went to the windows box and finally, flashed out. (I fear, [staff member], that I too murdered a machine…sigh) I turned it off and put an out of order sign up. When [another reference librarian] looked at it again, same problem, except we didn’t even get to the startup screen.

Also tonight we had a vomit incident. [Station #2] was lightly sprayed. I disinfected the heck out of the station, but I’m going to ask our cleaners to disinfect too, just to be sure. Until then the station has an out of order sign on it and no keyboard—[the other reference librarian] is replacing the keyboard tomorrow.
If you don't have a cast-iron constitution, working in libraries is probably not a good idea.

Frustrated

Can't find the flash drive that I've saved my family documents on.

Am beyond furious with myself.

We have too much sh** in this house and no time to organize or keep track of it. And then things like this happen, and I don't even know where to look. It SHOULD be in the safe. It was in the small safe, then it was (I thought) in the cupboard in the living room. Now it's neither place, nor in the big safe.

Part of it is still saved on a very old computer, so I could transfer that part through several permutations of formats (floppy, CD, flash) and put it on yet another flash drive, but I have cataloged at least one box--but I think it's actually two or more--since using that saved version, so perhaps I should just start over.

Sigh. If only I'd have finished this three years ago.

It's Teaching Time

Apparently, this month (maybe longer) I'm supposed to be learning how to manage frustration and set-backs. I'm not doing very well with it. My glasses STILL aren't right, and I'm feeling randomly murderous today toward IT people, specifically those sharing names with my nephew.

Also very very unmotivated about almost everything most people would deem "important." People telling me what's important makes me rebellious at the best of times, and it really seems as if I'm getting a lot of pressure to do things I couldn't possible care less about handling.

I feel like weeping every day. In fact, I feel like weeping about three times a day, when I'm not feeling like I want to throw up, or when I'm not feeling on the verge of a full-blown panic attack.

I need a f'ing vacation.

My wake-up call

Hi ho hi ho–it’s off to work I go. Beast woke me up before heading off to golf so that I could get ready for work. This was his news since last night:
  1. Beast got a call last night from his dad: a friend (or a "friend") from his veterans' group wants to borrow money from him. As in several thousand dollars.
    Uh, duh?

  2. Beast washed my phone by accident last night in the washing machine. I asked him to charge it for me, he put it in the pocket of his shorts, and then forgot--probably because of the phone call from his dad–-and threw those shorts into the wash with the towels before coming to bed.
So now I’m off to work. Phone-free at least for the day. Sad. But it could be worse, right? We could be on vacation when something like this happened.
