Avoidance

I should be working on this morning's Sunday School lesson, or at least settling on what I'm doing with the (probably small turnout) class today, but I had a thought.

You know when you get together with a friend who brings along some friends of his* own and it brings some deeper understanding of your friend? You get to see how he^ interacts with others, you get to meet some potentially cool people--I mean, after all, they are people someone you like has chosen to spend time with so you should have stuff in common--and maybe make some new friends of your own. This is the expected outcome, I think, in gatherings of this sort.

So, what does it mean when you come across someone in the Friend of a Friend situation that you absolutely loathe? Like, on sight. And then he^ opens his* mouth and confirms that he^ is worthy only of being swatted or ignored at best. And once you've been introduced he^ ignores you and prates on and on about how wonderful your mutual friend is in every way. Which, technically, of course is true. I mean you both like this friend, right? But suddenly you are questioning your friend's judgment in the friend-making department and wondering if you also are a complete jackass.

It's even worse when you have a good friend who is married to an asshat. Or, in my case--though this is NOT where this thought originated--a sister whose husband needs to be dropkicked into oblivion.

What does one do when one sees a friend being toadied to? Agree with the toad? Ignore the toad? Argue with the toad? There's no win-win solution and I just end up feeling weirdly distanced and disconnected from my friend and sort of jealous and weird and insecure and middle-school-y.

Which brings me full-circle to the need to do some work on Sunday School stuff.

________
* or her
^ or she
Both done for ease since having to write "he or she" in every case would be ludicrous and I just can't deal with "they" all the time. In this case, it got kind of convoluted writing "they" anyway.

12 Days of Christmas Blog Challenge

5 Life lessons you learnt in 2013 (29th December)

I'm still working on internalizing and living most of these, but they are the ones that I had to keep going back to revisit because they are HARD for me.
  1. Detachment from drama is necessary. I've never liked drama, or dramatic people, but this year was a solid reminder that this is a wholly rational thing--drama isn't good for me.
  2. Babies' births are everyday miracles. I watched one arrive this year, and it's pretty unbelievable. Another addition to the extended family looks like it will be arriving any day now, and I'm beyond excited even though I won't be there this time.
  3. Grades in school do not indicate success in life. I hope. ;-)
  4. Say no and mean it, and then don't feel guilty about it.
  5. People, in general, are good and helpful and friendly. I think most of us have a much larger support system than we recognize, or utilize.

Thanksgivukkah

Your Thanksgiving Name Is: November America
Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of our thanksgiving.

My gratefulness list:
  • My families: of birth, of marriage, of choice, of friends and neighbors.
  • ...especially Sparky, who noticed last night at dinner that I got my hair cut. OK, so it's been 19 months since I whacked off about 10", but he did notice...!
  • Oatmeal baths.
  • God.
  • Being able to celebrate Hanukkah today. So cool.
  • Healing and people who are wise in the way of cures and medicine.
  • Quick-prep breakfast food.
  • Options.
  • Central heat, indoor plumbing, and a pretty fabulous house.
  • Guinea pigs.
  • Ridiculous parades. And football.
  • Life.
My wish for all is that you can make a list like this one of all the lights in your surroundings. Blessings upon you and yours today and always.

Strange day, strange week

It occurred to me yesterday that the past two weeks are the first two Mondays I've worked at 9 a.m. in almost 20 years. When I was working part-time at my current place of work, I never worked Mondays. When I went full-time a couple of years ago, I was scheduled to work 11-7. That was the pits. So, now I'm (finally) working normal hours.* And it feels weird.

I got up this morning at 7 so I could go do my volunteering at my son's (former) high school. At 7:45, they called to say, "Don't come!" because they're setting up for foreign language AP testing in the library there today, so shelving is not really possible. So, ok, I'm up early for no reason in a really busy week. Which means I'm blogging, so there's that.

Beast is headed to load up Sparky's dorm this afternoon. It's going to be strange having the boy back, but he's only home for about 3 weeks before summer classes start. Probably not long enough to get to 100% annoyance. ;-)

Tonight I'm being inducted (?) into a sorority. Yes, as a matter of fact, I am eating crow as part of that process, and I'm also a late bloomer. Kinda fun, kinda flaky, kinda silly. But long-term: good.

I've been to the doctor twice in the past couple of weeks. Nothing to worry about: just a physical, parts 1 and 2. I got orders to lose weight, and get a mammogram and a bone density scan (both prophylactic). Meh. Hello, Weight Watchers, my old frenemy.

Friday, my day off this week, I will be spending the day at one of the middle schools judging 8th grade projects. I have done this now for 6 or 7 years and it's one of my favorite days of the year. However, I don't usually do the whole day, so this will be a marathon. Unfortunately, it also means that I have to reschedule the hair and massage appointments that I made before I realized I'd be tied up all day.

And I NEED that massage: my right shoulder/neck/collarbone/skull have been one giant knot since  Sunday. Maybe Saturday. I had a headache the past two days. I'm hoping some of the stretches I did last night will ameliorate the headache today at least.

And then there's work, which hasn't been bad, just busy. And the usual regular weekly commitments. Beast is hitting the road again tomorrow. The weather has been amazingly beautiful. Life could be worse. Life is worse for a lot of people. I have no complaints, not really.

__________
*My previous schedule, as worked out with the previous director, should give you some insight into her psyche:
Mondays 11-7 (no lunch break, my choice)
Tuesdays 12-9
Wednesdays 8-4 (no lunch break, again, my choice)
Thursdays 9-6
Fridays OR Saturdays, alternating 8-5
And occasional Sundays 1-4. Every . Single . Day . Was . Different. So confusing.

No nerves

OK, so I have the new Blogger post template and it's extremely odd. I'm sure I'll get used to it, but right now it's just ... white on white.

But the main reason I decided to break radio -- er, blog -- silence is that I realized today that I've finally reached the point where I don't lie awake for a week before an 'event' and worry and plan and obsess and freak out about it endlessly. Tomorrow is Sparky's graduation party and despite the fact that we don't know if we'll have 30 or 100 people show up, I'm pretty much ok with where we are. I realized a few days ago that anyone who isn't on Facebook isn't going to come because I didn't do any invites outside of the Event posting there. I suck. And I'm ok with that.

And that's the weird part: I'm ok with things. We may need more food, entailing an emergency run to the store midday. We may not have enough chairs, or tables. People will just have to pitch in and get comfortable and hang out. I hope they are ok with that. I am. And tomorrow, I'll have to be aware of people who aren't quite sure of themselves. And, guess what: I'm ok with that too.

In other news, it's hotter than blazes, and we haven't had rain for a couple of weeks, so I'm really excited about the fact that the grass is CRUNCHY, like when I grew up!

[Side note: our creepy neighbor was arrested yesterday at his house. That's all we know, aside from refusing to leave his house until a warrant was issued, which took a couple of hours. I'm sure it'll be in the paper.]

It's good to have friends who don't always agree

...right?

It's also really hard when a good friend gets 'very verbal' on Facebook with someone in my family. Hard to take sides--although I agree with the family member heaps more than I agree with the friend--since the subject is freedom of speech. I can't, therefore, tell her to shut up on my Facebook wall. Well, ok, I could but she wasn't that vicious, just stupid. OK, I can call her that here since she doesn't know about this blog. She's full of Faux News bullshit and right-wing conservative stoopudutee.

Yes, I have friends like that. Don't you? If not, you should. Always good to have another point of view in the mix, eh?

Facebook updates

I find it fascinating the serendipity that happens in my friends' Facebook posts. I have them forwarded to Google Reader so they all show up at once, minus all the group, game, and page updates that clutter up the actual Facebook page. I keep saying to myself, "I should post these--it's so WEIRD how they make sense, and they are not at all related to one another!" (most of the time)

So I'm finally doing it.
KaDi  I PASSED!!!!:)

BriJoPe is the happiest guy alive. :)

CheDi We now have 3 licensed drivers in our house....Congratulations Ka[...]!!! [to be clear, this is from the mom of the person listed first]

RoTe Andy Burnham: "Let's not get obsessed by this issue, because it really is irrelevant. It's a kind of fringe pursuit for Guardian-reading classes." Yeah, forget the 56,000 people who are definitely for parliamentary and electoral reform, Andy. It's the most fundamental thing that needs to happen in our politics, because it allows us to vote for who we actually WANT to vote for, not just who we think MIGHT win.

AWe Single from Manchester - London = £65. Cab far[e] London - home = £65 :(

MeThe i really need some wine right now.

LaClo The NPC should be proud of me-just trolled the beach for a couple hours perfecting my Bikini judging skills.

BaHo Just under two hours and counting, finished with work. Saturday pack, Sunday Miami. Next Friday Key West.....you all know what that means to a Parrothead!

ERi "I quit those days and my redneck ways" ... or at least I don't have a car that doesn't run sitting in front of my house anymore.
With the one exception noted above, none of these statuses are related to each other, but in that list we have two English people one after another, two of my high school friends one after another, three mission trip friends (from two different years) in a clump together, and a very "Friday" theme going on.

Thanks, ya'll.

What to do, what to do...

Someone with whom I went to high school just friended me on Facebook. This is VERY odd, as I don't recall her EVER speaking to me.

Ever.

At school.

At reunions.

Ever.

Tempted to friend her but block her from all updates. Is that evil? Or sensible? What would Miss Manners do?

New Rule

Everyone should have (at least) one friend who will lovingly tell the unvarnished truth, or at least poke airholes into a closed system.

Why? See here, and take a look at the See Also references, too.

Exceptionally vague

So, there are two people I know, one a former friend and the other is someone I met because of the first person. Let's call them R and D. It's been at least 18 months since I started pulling away from R. In virtually every interaction, I noticed a distinct inability to step away from R's worldview and countenance other people's feelings. At first I thought it was me--because, well, isn't that how we're trained?

The first crack, admittedly, began as hearsay from another friend (J) who told me some stories about working with (for) R that...relit the painting. It was like suddenly seeing the young woman in this picture when before all you've seen is the old woman. Or, perhaps more symbolically, the other way around. But I'm always leery of hearsay, and cracks can be mended.

About this time, R asked me for a job recommendation, which I was happy to provide. I never received a thank you, even though I spent a great deal of time figuring out how to finesse some details about how to write a recommendation for someone with whom I'd worked only about 6 hours total over the time we'd known each other. The lack of an expression of gratitude sort of annoyed me, but then friends do annoy each other sometimes, right?

Meanwhile, the relationship between R and D was growing and seemed to be thriving. I didn't know D well, having had a total of one conversation in strained circumstances. But I got the sense of a deep, kind, smart and intelligent person, someone it would be fun and interesting to get to know better. Because they both seemed happy, I was happy for them.

The crack widened almost imperceptibly when R--who is proud to be at least agnostic--made a very snide, very rude generalized remark about my religion in a discussion about the Religious Right. Yes, I'm a Christian, and the nutcases drive me crazy, but this comment was a bit like having a stranger slug your little sister. When I gently suggested that perhaps R might be over-reacting, I was ignored. Even when I addressed it online rather pointedly, my point of view was not addressed. No apology, no reaction, no private conversation, just...nothing.

Two weeks later, R asked me to pray for a friend who had just had a pretty horrible tragedy befall her and was grieving a desperate loss. Go back and read that: R asked me to pray. Here's (part of) the email:
You know I don't do God. ...If you would add [friend] to your thoughts and prayers, I would appreciate it, and so would she. ...

It feels pretty odd to ask someone else to pray for a friend, when I'm not sure I think it means anything, but I know it would mean something to [the friend], and all that goodwill can't be bad, no matter what you believe, right?

Thanks.
The time stamps says it all: it took me 90 minutes to reply in toto:
I forwarded the basics to our prayer chain and will add the whole family to my list as well. Keep me posted, eh?
So much of my original email was deleted in that final response. I nearly didn't reply at all. I was...stunned. But I did pray, not just for R's friend, but for understanding and clarity for myself. There was, by the way, no follow up regarding R's friend, the prayer, the situation I had been told about...nothing. [which actually was fine, since I gave up tying my prayers to concrete long ago]

A few more conversations, a few more cracks. Then a huge blowup that I know was more about other stuff than the subject over which I blew. Ostensibly, it was judging people by how they speak, but it was (again) very generalized, very mean-spirited, and when I called R on it--because yes, I'll admit I can be thin-skinned over living my whole life in Flyover Country--I got a lot of justification and blah-blah, along with insistence on me being overly sensitive. Not even a hint of "I didn't say what I meant to say very well" from R.

Soon thereafter, I stopped reading online messages from R. And then months later, R friended me on Facebook. And I got the sense that there was some friction between R and D, whom I checked in with periodically but definitely more as a "Friend of R" than as "friend of D." D and I were NOT friends on Facebook. Boundaries.

Two months later, the pattern continuing to escalate, I did the Unfriend thing. Within a week, I got a message asking to "Add R to Your Friends", which I left sit for awhile and eventually confirmed. Within a week those status updates were upsetting me so much that I went back to Unfriend. Which is where we stand now.

Five or six months ago, I started reading R's "private" blog again because it is absolutely hysterically funny. Not intentionally; in fact, from the outside it's pretty pathetic. Which is why it's funny. {meow} I also started reading D's blog to get another point of view, change the lighting of the picture again.

And what a picture it has become. -->

I do not like it when people are malicious to one another. I also do not like prevarication and splitting hairs. I am the first to say that Bill Clinton, in his definitive statement, "I did NOT have sex with that woman, Miss Lewinsky!" was lying. Much like Justice Potter Stewart, I may not be able to define certain things, but I know what they are when I see them. And one other cliché: If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it is, most likely, a duck.

For my part--and a very small part of the drama I am!--I know that allowing R to continue to upset me was/is not healthy. I am slowly learning to remove unhealthy things from my life, so R is gone except in terms of sideshow. The good things R has brought me are many, and I appreciate all of them--R does manage to be surrounded by good things and some exceptional people, which is a little confusing--but possibly the greatest joy is having met D, who was kind and generous with my son at a time when it would have been easier and perfectly acceptable to blow Sparky off completely. For that alone, and for doing it without awareness or expectation of anything from me, D has earned a large portion of friendship.

I like people who don't do things because they "should" but because those things are the right things to do. D is someone like that. R, as I have found out, does things strategically. While I am not willing to say that's always wrong, it's not the way I operate and I don't easily trust people who live their lives always thinking how best to maneuver and control the people and situations around them, both ahead of time and after events have occurred.

Now that I've written all this down, I hope it means I can sleep tonight. Today has been filled with disturbing events and lots of hurtful words and thoughts about R and D and all those in similar situations.

What.A.Day.

  • Boring Bible Study text this morning. The pastor even said so. lol

  • Technology issues leading to a cretinously slow database at work.

  • The mere thought of vomit on surfaces at work.

  • Laughing with E. for 10 minutes over a book of tongue-twisters, followed by mooning with her over an adorable book of poems "by" dogs. I love our children's librarian.

  • Too much processed sugar in one afternoon.

  • 14 straight hours away from the house.

  • Email from church about a 12-year-old in our community who has an inoperable brain tumor which sprung a leak in her head. She's (back) in the hospital, in pain but improving. Terrifying and very sad.

  • Email from The Boss at 1:30 p.m.: "I need some statistics for your report, which I have to present to the Board tonight."

  • Registration forms I've been requesting for two months (and worrying about for another month before that) which arrived last week...are due on Monday. Next Monday, 2/8. Ten days to collect everyone's info. Nice organization, PCUSA. Real *$%@!ing nice.

  • I'm not a fan of sloppy joes. Just sayin'.

  • People who can't read music...in a choir. The are nice people. They can't read music. O.M.G.

  • The most boring part EVER assigned to me in that choir. Seriously: I play in 8 out of about 40 measures, maybe 10 notes total.

  • Worry over FIL's complete lack of energy after his last three dialysis visits. Not to mention his laryngitis. And his toe.

  • Beast had a crappy sales call today. And he's far from home and feeling a little out of things.

  • Email from a friend whose life is so tragic. According to her. Well, you made your own bed, Ms. L--now you're lying in it. We all have to lie in our own sh**, you aren't so special. Lots of people have it worse off, and most of us have at least as much going on...but no, YOURS is so much worse. Because it's yours. Yeah. F**k you and the horse you rode in on. I have no tolerance anymore.

  • This was Sparky's birthday. Not that you'd be able to notice, since he was up at 6:45, off to school, then church (study group and dinner) and then back to school for ACT class. He just went up to bed...10 p.m. Happy 17th, Baby Boy! {eyeroll}

  • Blackberry Stoli + tonic + lime = To Die For
I'm taking a mental health day tomorrow. I wish I could do the same for about 6 other people who need the same thing and can't actually do it. But I'm seeing a friend. A real friend. Someone I don't think "f**k you" thoughts about. Ever. Yay.

Oooh, and Beast comes home tomorrow, too. More yay!

Long Day

I left at 8:45 this morning for church. From church I went straight to work with my lunch in hand. Cataloged for two hours, worked the Sunday reference desk for three hours, stayed after and worked on monthly stats, went to the Dollar Store for snacks and drinks and then to the grocery store for a chicken-salad sandwich for me, and then headed back to church for the youth group meeting. I was home by 8:20, I think.

Meanwhile, Beast went to the hospital to check on his dad, came home and worked outside for a few hours, came to the youth group meeting, left early to go back to the hospital one last time, and came home.

There were two voicemails on our home phone today from a friend of my sister Jean's. While Jean and Reg were here visiting last week, Friend drove in from her home about 90 minutes away and spent the day with them. She called one more time before they left. She's an odd woman, but whenever Jean is in the area, they get together and chat, and I guess she has visited them at their home too. Whatever. Circumstances being what they have been, I don't think she's done more than meet Beast once. He barely knows her, and certainly would neither recognize her name nor her face if he came across them.

The first call this morning was clocked in at 8:56. She wants to know what's going on with Jean. (She is in the hospital in Colorado near Marie because she wasn't breathing well: they discovered pneumonia, anemia, and a general inability to suck in enough oxygen at 8,000 feet above sea level.) "Now!" is all over Friend's voice in the message. She called back at 2:39 this afternoon and left another "CALL ME!!" message. I didn't notice when I got home that we had voicemail--we rarely have anything interesting on it, so I usually don't bother to look. Beast found the second message when he came home at 9:10, which reminded him to tell me about the first one.

I do not call people after 9 p.m. except in pretty dire circumstances. So she'll wait.

However, she has now become Class A Bitch in my book. Dude, you ARE NOT A FAMILY MEMBER. F**k the f**kety-f**k OFF! And do not...do NOT tell me what to do. Reg has Skype; Friend has Skype. They worked that all out last week. If he (or Jean) wanted her to know the details, he'd've Skyped her. Or she could Skype him and ask for details.

I hate being a go-between. HATE. IT. I did this when Ellen died with everyone in my family for about a year and then pulled the plug. You got something to say, say it to the person who needs to hear it. You got a question to ask someone, ask them. Not me. I'm out of this. And so...yeah, I'll call Friend and tell her nothing and that I will be away from ALL PHONE CONTACT EXCEPT EMERGENCIES for the rest of the week. I will do that. Tomorrow.

Oh, wait: her voicemail isn't set up on her cell so I can't leave a message.

* * * * * * * *

Any patience I might have had for humankind earlier today has evaporated. And I think I'm getting sick. Which is all because other people infected me. STUPID PEOPLE!

Facebook strikes again

OK, weirdness: the guy on whom I had a Major League Crush in 9th grade just friended me on Facebook. I had been sort of stalking him from afar, giggling a little, but too embarrassed to friend him. We were never actually friends, I just worshipped him from afar--though I was over him pretty much by the time he graduated, a year before I did.

Judging by the photos in his profile, he's now a fairly serious bodybuilder. It was a little brain-stretch to fit my memories over his current look, but the eyes are the same. And his kids are adorable.

Facebook=really strange. My friends list continues to grow increasingly diverse, and reminds me again of all the different strands of life that are woven into my personal history.
